Chengresi also known as Avalokitesvara is a bodhisattva. Chengresi is mainly referred to as the bodhisattva of compassion. He is the lord endowed with complete illumination. In one prominent Buddhist story, Chengresi vows never to rest until he has helped free all sentient beings from samsara. The four arms of Chengresi symbolize:

  1. Immeasurable loving kindness
  2. Immeasurable compassion
  3. Immeasurable joy
  4. Immeasurable equanimity

Mantra: “Om Mani Padme Hum”

Reciting this mantra and looking upon the Chenrezig thangka has an immense benefit. Chenrezig is a bodhisattva who has delayed its enlightenment for helping to suffer in the world. Avalokiteshvara is the different form of Chenrezig in 1000 arms and 1000 eyes so that Chenrezig can offer help towards all sentients. Personally, for me Chenrezig is the thangka which helped me to deeply understand true meaning of Love & Compassion

Chenrezig is also known as Changresi or Kuan Yin in Chinese. Chenrezig is not a real person, but a part or an aspect of our enlightened Buddha Mind according to Tibetan Buddhism. Chenrezig is depicted in bright white perfect body with all signs of Bodhisattva of Compassion. With 4 arms, the two palms join in a praying gesture, in third hand holds a lotus flower near his ear, symbolizing the purity of his mind, in right hand holds prayer beads and the six syllables of Om Mani Padme Hum joyfully dancing in his heart. He sits on a large Lotus flower, with a great compassion looking to the sentient beings. He is always listening someone will recite his mantra and ask for his help. Chenrezig is always ready to come and help.

Thangka Painting Guide

How should I care for my Thangka painting?

To preserve the beauty and longevity of your Thangka painting, keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Display it in a clean, dry environment and avoid direct contact with water, as it can damage the painting.

For a traditional touch, consider framing your Thangka with brocade from Himalayas Shop. This not only enhances its beauty but also adds an extra layer of protection. When not in use, carefully roll up the Thangka and store it in a protective cover to avoid creasing or tearing.

You could also frame it at your local shop for modern look.

Where Should I Hang My New Thangka Painting?

Your Thangka painting should be hung in a place of respect, such as a meditation room, living room, or altar area. Ensure it is displayed at eye level to fully appreciate the intricate details.

Thangka can also be displayed in offices to create a serene and positive environment, or in your child's room to introduce them to spiritual art from an early age, fostering their spiritual journey.

Can I Use Thangka Paintings for Meditation?

Yes, Thangka paintings are often used as meditation aids. The detailed imagery and symbolic meanings can help focus the mind and deepen meditation practices. Choose a Thangka depicting a deity or mandala that resonates with you and place it in your meditation space to enhance your practice.

How Long Does It Take to Paint a Thangka?

The time required to complete a Thangka painting varies based on its size and complexity. A small, simple Thangka might take several weeks to month complete.

Thangka paintings are not created with commercial intentions to be finished quickly; rather, painting a Thangka is a deeply spiritual practice for the artist itself. High-level master artists take their time, painting only when they have the right energy and spiritual alignment.
